PanOptix Intraocular Lens

On September,2 019, Dr. Bryan Monson was selected to be the first surgeon in the area, and among the first in the nation, to place a new type of intraocular lens (IOL) implant capable of restoring to only distance, but also intermediate and near vision in patients dealing with “over 40 vision” or cataracts. People have been coming across the United States to have their lenses replaced in Logan.

This new lens is comprised of the newest technology, created to imitate the full vision range of youth. Earlier lens implants were designed to provide patients undergoing cataract surgery one range of vision (usually distance) leaving patients to rely on glasses for the rest.

Trifocal Vision Benefits

The PanOptix lens is the first and only trifocal lens currently available in the US to provide clear distance, near and intermediate vision.

Dr. Monson is able to combine the trifocal vision benefits of the Alcon PanOptix Lens with new, safer more precise, laser cataract surgery. Laser cataract surgery replaces the surgical blade and hand-held equipment used in traditional cataract surgery with a remarkably precise, computer-guided laser.

These IOLs are changing the way we practice and the way patients will be able to experience the world around them.

The secret to this new technology is a hi-tech light responsive biocompatible material
used to create the implantable lens. When exposed to a specific wavelength of UV light, this
lens material reacts in a very predictable, repeatable shape change. Depending on the pattern of UV light exposure, the lens can be altered in shape with light to correct residual nearsightedness, farsightedness and even astigmatism. The variations of adjustment
are nearly infinite and the lens can be adjusted multiple times. This new lens technology is
a revolutionary advancement bettering the outcome of vision correction surgery.

What is a Cataract and How is It Treated?

The lens in the eye can become cloudy and hard, a condition known as a cataract. Cataracts can develop from normal aging, from an eye injury, or if you have taken medications known as steroids. Cataracts may cause blurred vision, dulled vision, sensitivity to light and glare, and/or ghost images. If the cataract changes vision so much that it interferes with your daily life, the cataract may need to be removed. With precision laser vision correction, Intraoperative Aberrometry (ORA) for precise lens selection, we offer the most sophisticated and minimally invasive approach ever developed to treat cataracts. How Will Removing the Cataract Affect My Vision?

The goal of cataract removal surgery is to correct the decreased vision that was caused by the cataract. During the surgery, the Ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) removes the cataract and puts in a new artificial lens called an intraocular lens or IOL. Cataract surgery will not correct other causes of decreased vision, such as glaucoma, diabetes, or age-related macular degeneration. Most people still need to wear glasses or contact lens after cataract surgery for either near and/or distance vision and astigmatism.

Make Treating Your Glaucoma a Part of Treating Your Cataract

For patients with glaucoma, Dr. Monson may add another step to your laser vision correction that allows your glaucoma to be treated in a completely new way. Cypass and iStent are among the world’s smallest medical implants, yet deliver big results.

Once diagnosed with glaucoma, you and most patients like you will spend the rest of their lives taking one, two or even three different medication drops. Unfortunately, you will need to use these drops every day, which will not only be inconvenient but can also get expensive. Cypass and iStent are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glaucoma treatment in those with mild or moderate glaucoma and may be placed at the time of your cataract procedure.

  • Allegretto Wavefront Optimized Technology

    The Allegretto family of lasers are the fastest and most precise laser systems for visioncorrection available in the U.S. Wavelight lasers represent a new generation of refractive technology far more recently designed than other laser platforms. They use technology referred to as High Performance Vision Correction, intended to achieve exceptional visual results under all lighting situations, day and night. The laser employs what is called Perfect Pulse Technology® to safely and accurately control every single laser pulse from start to finish. The flexible performance of Allegretto Wavefront Optimized® LASIK technology enables the correction of each individual’s unique refractive errors while preserving the cornea’s natural shape, effectively reducing side effects such as poor night vision, glare and halos.

  • Thinner Than the Width of a Human Hair
    That’s the precision of correction to gently shape the surface of the cornea with light.
    Each laser vision correction procedure is customized for the refraction and corneal curvature of each patient. The focused light isn’t seen or felt, and imparts no burning sensation.
  • The Speed  of Sight 
    Monson Vision uses the fastest FDA-approved LASIK platform available in the country.
    Each “burst” of the Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q 400Hz Laser lasts mere billionths of a second before the laser shifts to its next position—up to 100 times faster than some lasers.  A correction of one diopter requires just two seconds of treatment. Which means shorter procedure times with increased accuracy.
  • Results
    After the WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser procedure, patients are able to experience corrected vision. The laser offers highly customized cornea reshaping for the best possible results from almost any type of laser vision correction.
    Clinical data presented to FDA showed that in a large group of patients, quality of night vision after treatment was better than night vision quality before treatment, with best glasses or contact lenses. This is a first in history.
  • Eye Tracker

    Eyes make constant involuntary movements, even in LASIK surgery. The WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser system includes a closed loop eye tracker that tracks the eye’s location during surgery to make sure that the eye has not moved before delivering the next pulse of laser energy. Eye movements are tracked with each laser pulse.

  • Perfect Pulse Technology

    Perfect Pulse Technology controls every single pulse transmitted by the laser to ensure the accuracy, safety and speed of the procedure. With this monitoring, only every fifth pulse overlaps the previous one, reducing the risks of overheating the cornea.     • More precise than any other femtosecond laser with positional accuracy ~3 microns rather than >6 with other, older femtosecond systems
    • Delivers better results at lower total energy outputs because the laser energy (fluence) is lower and more focused
